About Hawk Engineering
Hawk Engineering is the sister company of General Steel. It was
formed in 1984 after its original parent company, Doane Pet Care (D.P.C.), experienced
difficulty finding the service, quality and reliability required for its own
needs in the machining of components used in the petfood extrusion industry.
Currently, Hawk produces components for many industries including pet food,
breakfast cereal, snack food, livestock, poultry, aquatic food, petroleum,
chemical, construction and printing press industries.
In 1986, due to rapid growth in both inner-company and outside sales, the
business relocated from a 3,000 sq. ft. facility in the D.P.C. Petfood plant in
Joplin, MO, to a 10,000 sq. ft. building in neighboring Galena, KS. The shop
has continued to grow as the business has increased and is currently 30,000 sq.
Ft.
The shop was initially designed to handle low volume short lead-time orders on
conventional machines. As the volumes increased, the component designs and
machining requirements became more difficult to be feasibly produced on
conventional machines. Beginning in 1986, CNC lathes and mills were added to
the shop. Today, the shop continues to specialize in processing low production
runs with short lead-times on both conventional and CNC equipment.
Processing these low volume orders require experienced machinists on both the
conventional and CNC machines as it is not unusual to have setup changeovers 3
times per machine per workshift. The shop currently has over 30 employees
working 2 shifts with machining experience averaging more then 18 years.
Hawk, along with General Steel, is enjoying the transition to their new owners,
Mars Petcare US. Hawk's future plans include updating the current computer network, updating
operational software to give customers online access to current order status,
expanding the customer base and adding machines to maintain the short
lead-times, quality, service and reliability upon which the company has built.
